The Facts
Based on the Prince George's County Food System Study (2015)*:
- One in seven persons in Prince George's County are food insecure and participation in federal food assistance programs is on the rise.
- Almost all food insecure person's surveyed run out of their federal food assistance benefits before the end of the month.
- More than one in three said that they or their household members had to skip meals in the past year because of not having enough food.
- A third of the respondents are not able to feed their children enough nutritious food all or some of the time.
- More than half of the surveyed population buy fresh fruits and vegetables only once a month.
And based on worldwide studies** of the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on food insecure persons, these numbers are likely to have increased significantly.
