The Facts

Based on the Prince George's County Food System Study (2015)*:

  1. One in seven persons in Prince George's County are food insecure and participation in federal food assistance programs is on the rise.
  2. Almost all food insecure person's surveyed run out of their federal food assistance benefits before the end of the month.
  3. More than one in three said that they or their household members had to skip meals in the past year because of not having enough food.
  4. A third of the respondents are not able to feed their children enough nutritious food all or some of the time.
  5. More than half of the surveyed population buy fresh fruits and vegetables only once a month.

And based on worldwide studies** of the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on food insecure persons, these numbers are likely to have increased significantly.
